The annual SONO meeting will feature the latest research and pressing topics for oncology nurses.

Physicians’ Education Resource’s (PER)® 3rd Annual School of Nursing Oncology ™ meeting will feature the latest and greatest in oncology nursing updates, as well as question-and-answer sessions with experts, and a glimpse of what the future will hold for oncology nursing.

The conference will also offer continuing education (CE) credits for those who attend.

“We are back for our third year ofSONO to offer a comprehensive oncology nursing overview targeting oncology nurses who treat all types of cancer. This year’s conference will again highlight updates from the most common types of cancer, including breast, lung, [and] colon cancers, as well as melanoma [genitourinary] cancers,” said meeting co-chair Beth Eaby-Sandy, MSN, CRNP.

“The curriculum will also include leukemia and CAR T-cell therapies to include the latest treatments available, and a discussion of how nurses can talk with their patients about these cutting-edge treatments.”

The meeting will be held August 2-3, 2019 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina in San Diego, California, and is co-chaired by three leading experts: Eaby-Sandy of the Abramson Cancer Center Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; Grace Cherry, RN, MSN, NP, of the UCLA Melanoma Program; and Laura S. Wood, RN, MSN, OCN, of the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center.

Attendees can expect a dynamic experience, where they will engage with faculty on topics such as:

  • Essentials for oncology nurses on breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, gynecologic cancers, leukemia, and lung cancer
  • Medical marijuana
  • Clinical trials
  • CAR T-cell therapy
  • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CINV) and immunotherapy-related adverse event (irAE) management

“Importantly, we will cover the most common toxicities we deal with in oncology in the current landscape,” said Eaby-Sandy. “New this year will be a session about understanding oncology clinical trials, a nurse’s guide to medical marijuana, and achieving health equity in oncology.”

To wrap things up, Emmy Award winner and New York Times Best-Selling Author Derek Hough will give the keynote address. Hough, a dancer and choreographer best known for his time on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars—he’s the only person to have won 6 times—will speak to the attendees on August 3.

“We are excited to feature Keynote Speaker Derek Hough of Dancing With the Stars and hear his take on oncology nursing. Set in beautiful San Diego, we anticipate a great conference packed with education and fun networking opportunities,” said Eaby-Sandy.
