Robert Andtbacka, MD, CM, Huntsman Cancer Institute, notes the importance of treating the patient’s emotional needs, as well as the needs of the patient’s family.

When younger patients receive a cancer diagnosis, they can worry about caring for their family and continuing to work. The nurse can help by keeping in touch with the patient and make sure they are coping emotionally. Additionally, Andtbacka reminds that clinicians are treating the whole family, not just the patient. Being aware of the family dynamics and building a relationship early on can be helpful.
