Richard Joseph, MD, an oncologist at Mayo Clinic, discusses mucosal melanoma.

Mucosal melanoma is a rare form of the disease that develops on the mucosal surfaces in the body, including the lining of sinuses and nasal passages, the mouth, vagina, rectum, and other areas.

Unlike cutaneous melanoma, c-Kit mutations are more common in mucosal melanoma than BRAF mutations.

Because the condition is so rare, the lack of data limits the number of treatment options for mucosal melanoma.
