Molly Olm-Shipman, BSN, RN, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, highlights the importance of preserving autonomy in patients with breast cancer by offering options.

She encourages two-way conversations when it comes to treatment discussions with patients and side effect management after radiation therapy. While the patient’s decision may not necessarily make medical sense, it is important for nurses and all other healthcare providers to really listen to a patient’s values and desires.
