Cabanillas, MD, associate professor, Department of Endocrine Neoplasia and Hormonal Disorders, Division of Internal Medicine, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, explains that for people who are newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer, it is imperative that they know all the details about their cancer before heading into surgery.

There are a number of different factors that determine which treatment is most appropriate and which will work best for a patient’s thyroid cancer. Cabanillas urges patients and doctors to know the type of thyroid cancer diagnosed, the advancement of the cancer, and the exact location before deciding on treatment.
