Kathi Mooney, PhD, RN, FAAN, Louis S. Peery and Janet B. Peery Presidential Endowed Chair in Nursing, College Of Nursing, University of Utah, Co-Leader Cancer Control and Population Sciences, Huntsman Cancer Institute, discusses the importance of improving symptom management in cancer patients.

Mooney says she feels that a lot more can be done to improve symptom management. Cancer research mostly focuses on new treatments and extending life while less research focuses on decreasing symptom burden.

While there have been advances in symptom management, Mooney says there is more to learn in terms of developing effective treatments and the mechanism of what causes symptoms. It is also important to educate providers on the importance of symptom management, Mooney says.
