Gary Shelton on When to Introduce Palliative Care

Video

Gary Shelton talks about how to know when to address palliative care with a patient.

Gary Shelton PhD, coordinator of supportive oncology services at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center, discusses the importance of introducing palliative care at the proper time.

Shelton suggests assessing a patient's situation to determine potential symptom burden, understanding of their disease, and understanding of palliative care. He says that even if there isn't the time to fully explain the palliative option, the idea can at least be introduced so a patient can begin thinking about it.
