Carol Cannon, RN, BSN, OCN, Oncology Program Specialist, Nurse Oncology Education Program, Austin, Texas, discusses the ONS Get Up, Get Moving Campaign.
Cannon says the campaign is designed to encourage nurses to teach their patients that physical activity is important throughout treatment and even after treatment. Many times, nurses fail to stress the importance of physical activity to their patients because there are so many other concerns that patients with cancer deal with.
However, exercise is extremely beneficial to patients and can sometimes help with their symptoms. Cannon says that the Get Up, Get Moving campaign helps nurses learn how to tailor exercises to each one of their patients.
